Tourists do go to The Hague

Dutch Tourism

Headline in Dutch newspaper: “Amsterdam tourist will not go to The Hague”.  This in response to the news that - since Amsterdam is suffering from too many tourists - they made a deal with The Hague to send their overload of tourists to the city of Peace & Justice. According to tourist expert Han Verheijden this strategy won’t work. His advice: “Try 17th century Holland with its beautiful canals, facades and famous old painters.
But this is exactly what The Hague has around the Dunne Bierkade: the dwelling houses of world famous painters Paulus Potter, Jan Steen and his father in law Jan van Goyen. Jan van Goyen was a painter of landscapes and sea and river scapes. His son in law Jan Steen is famous for his interior scenes. And Paulus Potter, a painter of rural scenes, is famous for his “Bull” which has the same renown worldwide as Rembrandt’s ’“De Nachtwacht” (The Nightwatch).

You can visit their houses nowadays and you could even stay in your very own (newly renovated) canal apartment. At the same canal, visitors can enter the monumental house of Claes van Balckeneynde, who has built the Royal palaces in The Hague as well as the Catshuis – the Dutch Prime Minister’s house.
Around the corner is the house of the great philosopher Spinoza.

Well, there is even more. In the 19th century painters of “De Haagse School” were living at this canal. Vincent van Gogh took his first painting lessons from them and lived for about 7 years in this area, before going to the French countryside where life was cheaper for a poor painter.

So far, The Hague hasn’t been proud of its past. However, it is now time for change. Especially since visitors from abroad seem to be more interested in these things than the Dutch in general. Are you interested in an authentic tour of the houses of the outdoor museum? Visit the Buitenmuseum.

The Ways Of The Dutch & Living In The Hague

The picture above gives a glimpse into the glorious beauty, history, and elegance that is the Netherlands in the spring and summer time! When you are in The Hague, although the way of life caters mostly to city living, you can also find a lot of time and many unique places to relax and have fun during your stay here. This time of year is really wonderful, because of the lovely weather and wonderful temperatures that make you want to sit outside and soak it all in.

The one thing that captures my attention like no other, every time I come for a visit, is the way that people conduct their day to day lives. Their priority is making and taking the time to enjoy the simple things of life. Here, they celebrate the warm weather like it is the best gift they could be given, and also make time for many outdoor activities such as visiting the beautiful, lush gardens throughout the city, going to spend time in the sun by the gorgeous beaches, or biking along the picturesque canals. Whether at the beach, sipping coffee or having a nice dinner, the Dutch really take time to live life to the fullest.  As an American, that sense of taking time for true enjoyment, a less rushed existence, and more emphasis on relaxation and recharging is probably the thing that stands out to me the most. It is what I try earnestly to take home with me every time I return from Holland.
